What happens during the install itself?
The technician removes wipers, cowl and moldings, cuts the old urethane bead, lifts the glass out, primes the pinch weld, lays a fresh high-modulus urethane bead and sets the new windshield. Careful prep of the bonding surface matters more to long-term strength than raw speed.
Any corrosion found on the pinch weld has to be treated first, which can add time but prevents leaks and bond failure later.
What is safe drive-away time and why does it matter?
Safe drive-away time is how long the urethane needs to reach the strength that federal crash standards assume. Most modern adhesives hit it in about one hour at moderate temperature and humidity, longer when it is cold. Your technician should state the exact time for the product used.
The bonded windshield helps the roof resist crush in a rollover and provides the backstop the passenger airbag deploys against, so this is a structural wait, not a cosmetic one.
How much longer does ADAS recalibration add?
Dynamic calibration requires a road drive at steady speed on clearly marked lanes, usually 30 to 45 minutes. Static calibration needs a level bay with manufacturer targets set at measured distances, closer to 60 to 90 minutes. Some vehicles require both procedures in sequence.
Camera aim tolerances are tight enough that a fraction of a degree of error shifts the system judgment of where the lane is.
