What ADAS calibration actually is

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) rely on a camera, and sometimes radar, aimed through or near the windshield. A shift of a millimeter or two at the glass becomes a large aiming error hundreds of feet down the road.

Because of that, most manufacturers require recalibration any time the windshield is removed and replaced, the camera bracket is disturbed, or the suspension or ride height changes.

Static vs. dynamic calibration

• Static calibration: performed indoors with targets set at measured distances on a level floor. Common on many European and Asian models.
• Dynamic calibration: performed by driving the vehicle at a set speed on well-marked roads while a scan tool relearns the camera.
• Dual calibration: some vehicles require both procedures before the system will clear.

Typical Denver-area calibration costs

Pricing varies by vehicle and by which procedure the manufacturer requires. In the Denver metro, the ranges below are what shops most often quote as a standalone calibration, separate from the glass itself:

• Dynamic calibration only: roughly $150–$300
• Static calibration in-shop: roughly $250–$450
• Dual static + dynamic: roughly $350–$600

How long it takes

Plan on the calibration adding time on top of the windshield work itself. Adhesive also needs to reach safe drive-away strength before a dynamic road procedure can begin.

• Dynamic calibration: about 30–60 minutes, weather and traffic permitting
• Static calibration: about 1–2 hours in the shop
• Dual calibration: often a half-day appointment
• Winter storms, wet roads and faded lane lines can push a dynamic calibration to the next day

Insurance and ADAS calibration

When a windshield is replaced under a comprehensive glass claim, the required calibration is generally treated as part of that repair rather than a separate optional add-on. Colorado drivers who carry comprehensive coverage often pay little or nothing out of pocket, though that depends entirely on your policy and deductible.
