Should I Repair or Replace My Windshield?
A straightforward way to decide between a chip repair and a full windshield replacement.
Start with three questions
- How big is it? Chips under about a quarter and short cracks lean repairable
- Where is it? Edge damage and anything in the driver's sight line leans replacement
- How many? Several impact points across the glass usually mean replacement
The case for repairing early
Repair is faster, much cheaper, keeps the factory seal intact and is often covered without a deductible. If your damage qualifies, there is very little reason to wait.
The catch is that the window for repair closes. Dirt, moisture and temperature swings all degrade the outcome.
The case for replacing
Replacement is the right call when the damage compromises visibility or structure. A windshield contributes to roof strength and airbag performance — it is not just a weather shield.
If you drive a vehicle with a windshield-mounted camera, plan for recalibration as part of the job.
When it is genuinely borderline
Send photos or have a technician look at it. A provider who tells you a marginal crack should be replaced rather than resin-filled is being honest about what resin can and cannot do.
