Repair if the damage is smaller than a quarter, more than a couple of inches from the edge, and outside your direct line of sight. Replace if the crack is long, reaches the edge, penetrates the inner layer, or sits where distortion would sit in front of the driver.
When it is genuinely borderline, replacement is the conservative call because the windshield is a structural part of the vehicle.
What three questions decide repair versus replacement?
How big is it, where is it, and how deep is it. Size sets whether resin can fill the void, location determines both optical safety and whether the structural edge bond is affected, and depth tells you whether the damage has passed through to the inner laminate.

Why repair a chip early?

Keeping the original factory bond is an underrated benefit: it was applied in controlled conditions and never disturbed.
When is replacement clearly the right call?
Replace when the crack reaches an edge, exceeds roughly six inches, branches into multiple long legs, sits in the driver sightline, or the damage has already been repaired once in the same spot. Any pitting that scatters oncoming headlights at night is also a replacement case.
If your vehicle has a forward camera, plan on recalibration as part of the replacement rather than an optional extra.
